A group of prisoners’ relatives appealed for help to Sverdlovsk’s human right defenders. These prisoners served their sentence in penal colony №55, Ivdel city, Sverdlovsk region. They complained that their relatives are beaten by prison personnel aimed to prevent applying claims from relatives about prison conditions.
On February 19, 2013 human defenders: Aleksey Sokolov, Larisa Zakharova and Roman Kachanov visited this colony to check information. Defenders were waiting for more than six hours trying to get a legal meeting with prisoners who appealed for help. But only after call to G. N. Gubankov (Head assistant of Federal Penitentiary Service in Sverdlovsk region on Human Rights Practices) our deal has moved forward and during afternoon after lunch time of deputy chief of the colony B.B.Koncevich (that lasted 3 hours), human defenders were allowed to the meeting room.
Human defenders were satisfied that finally they would find out the truth if there were facts of prisoners’ rights violence which includes beatings on the penal colony № 55 territory or it is doubtful information.
But it was not to be! The prison officer began to show copies of written «rejectons» of prisoners from legal help during couple hours. As a result all 11 prisoners «refused» from legal help of lawyer Kachanov and human rights defender Sokolov.
Human rights defenders were of course not satisfied and were forced to go to the investigation department in Sverdlovsk region in order to file a petition to take legal activity because human defenders have reasons to suspect that whether prisoners’ refusals were fake or given under pressure by administration of 55 colony.
